River beaches
The Miño River, as it passes through the municipality of Tui, offers several bathing areas, the most notable being the river beaches of Areneros, in Guillarei, and Penedo, in Caldelas.
In the mid-20th century, Metralla Beach, located very close to the town centre, was a popular swimming spot. Today, however, it has virtually disappeared due to the river’s erosion of the riverbank. Meanwhile, A Mariña Beach, on the Riverfront Promenade, has not been suitable for bathing for many years.
Areneros Beach has a small mooring jetty for boats.
Every summer, the Town Council prepares the beaches of Areneros (Guillarei) and Penedo (Caldelas) for visitors by cleaning these areas, installing public toilets, and, in the case of Guillarei, setting up a seasonal kiosk. Both beaches have received an “Excellent” rating in the bathing water quality monitoring carried out by the Galician Regional Government (Xunta de Galicia).
There are also other bathing areas used during the summer season, such as Pozo Baqueiro and Paredes Mills, located in the parish of Rebordáns.
